REBUILDING CAPITAL AND LIQUIDITY BUFFERS

BACKGROUND:

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, Central banks and supervisory authorities have taken measures to ensure that banks can retain their ability to continue lending to households and businesses. Relief measures range from using capital buffers to absorb losses, and having granted capital relief in various forms, many authorities have also allowed the use of existing liquidity buffers.

This webinar describes how buffers usability operates under Basel III Capital and Liquidity Standards and discusses how those standards have been applied to relieve a range of potential stresses and alleviate liquidity pressures.

OBJECTIVES:

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Understand different types of Capital buffers and Liquidity buffers requirements under Basel III.

2. Assess the importance of Capital and Liquidity buffers to preserve banks ‘lending activity and the stability of the banking sector.

3. Explain how supervisory authorities have used Capital and Liquidity buffers as a response to the covid-19 outbreak.

4. Ensure adequate transition to rebuild capital buffers and to replenish liquidity buffers to maintain healthy financial position of banks.
